The Different Types of Hair Loss

People normally lose about 100 strands of hair each day. This should not be something for you to worry about. However, if you somehow notice that you are losing hair at a certain rate in which you notice your hair thinning or having bald patches as a result, then you may be experiencing hair loss.

Alopecia is the general medical term used for hair loss. The development of alopecia may cause hair loss which can either result to bald patches or diffused hair thinning not just in the scalp but in other parts of the body as well.

There are several causes of hair loss. Genetics usually account for a large percentage of hair loss on the scalp. But aside from genetics, there are also a lot of other different factors which can cause hair loss either in the head or in other parts of the body or sometimes even in both. Some of the most common factors include medications. There are some forms of medications which can cause hair loss such as medications used for treating cancer.

After chemotherapy, cancer patients generally experience hair loss which can even lead to balding. Undergoing surgery or illness tends to cause stress and strain to an individual which then causes the body to temporarily stop some tasks which are not really considered to be of top priority in order to concentrate more on the tasks which are currently of topmost importance such as healing. For some people, the hair thinning and the slower process of hair growth does not necessarily imply any hereditary condition or illness but instead, it may just be a natural effect brought about by aging. Other known causes for hair loss include hormonal imbalance, especially among women, nutritional deficiency, hairstyles which may tend to damage the hair strands, and the overuse or misuse of various hair treatments as well.

The Different Types of Hair Loss

Hair loss or alopecia comes in several different types. Some of the most common forms of hair loss include the following.

Androgenic Alopecia

Androgenic alopecia is a form of hair loss which is also known as male pattern or female pattern baldness. While it is generally more common among men, women may also experience this condition as well. For men, androgenic alopecia is characterized by a receding hairline. This is then usually followed by thinning of the hair on the temples or on the crown of the head. This condition usually leaves a shape of hair which is similar to the shape of a horseshoe which is located around the sides and at the back of the head.

Alopecia Totalis

Alopecia totalis is a particular kind of hair loss condition wherein an individual will completely lose all the hair in his or her scalp.

Alopecia Universalis

If alopecia totalis is the total loss of hair in the scalp, alopecia universalis is a condition where there is a complete loss of both scalp and body hair.

Scarring Alopecia

Scarring alopecia is a particular kind of hair loss condition which is generally caused by another underlying health condition. In scarring alopecia, the location of the skin where hair loss occurs is somehow affected. The hair follicles generally get damaged and are replaced by scar tissues which further prevent the growth of new hair.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is a condition which is generally caused when the immune system of the body attacks the person’s hair follicles and therefore disrupts the normal process of hair formation and hair growth. It is usually characterized by bald patches which show on the scalp but may appear on other parts of the body as well.

Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia is another hair loss condition which is generally due to the damage of the hair follicles and the papilla which is brought about by the constant pulling and tension of the hair in long periods of time. This can occur among people who tend to pull their hair into very tight braids, particularly cornrows, which can result to high tension and eventually breakage of the hair strands. Cosmetic surgeries which tend to create hair tension, like face lifts, can also cause a person to experience traction alopecia.

Trichotillomania is a particular kind of disorder wherein an individual experiences an uncontrollable urge to pull out his or her own hair and this generally results in an evident hair loss.

Folliculitis is a certain kind of bacterial condition which is known to irritate the hair follicles. It is considered to be one of the most common kinds of skin infection which tends to cause pustules or inflammatory nodules to form around the hair. The infection can be deep or can be superficial which then causes the infected hair to easily fall out.

Telogen Effluvium

Telogen effluvium is a particular kind of condition wherein the hair follicles prematurely goes into the resting stage of the hair growth process which then results to hair loss. This condition is usually due to stress or a certain disease experienced by an individual.

Hypotrichosis is a certain kind of condition wherein there is no hair growth at all. Unlike other conditions which are characterized by the loss of hair in locations where there was formerly hair growth, hypotrichosis is a condition in which no hair growth occurred at all in the first place.
