What is baking soda?
Baking soda is a chemical compound called sodium bicarbonate. It is crystalline fine powder found nearly in every kitchen and used for leavening the food items such as cake. When sodium bicarbonate reacts with acid present in some foods, it produces carbon dioxide and water.
How does it work against acne?
Sodium bicarbonate is a crystalline fine powder that works as the following:
- Exfoliating Agent
- Neutralization of acidic environment
Acne flares up due to various reasons, but all causes results in clogging the hair follicles. Hair follicles usually clog with excessive sebum mixed width bacteria.
When hair follicles clogged up and sebaceous glands continuously produce sebum, it ruptures hair follicles. If the sebum still stays inside the skin and a bump appears, it is called white head and if the bump pops out the skin it is called blackheads.
Exfoliation is a process of scrubbing the skin with fine powdery substance that removes dead skin cells from the skin surface and allow the sebum to come out freely. When sebum continuously keeps on discharging from inside, it ruptures neither the hair follicles nor does it produce inflammation.
Neutralization of acidic environment:
You may develop acne due to bacterial or fungal infection of hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Most of the unicellular organisms have their outer cell walls of cellulose or other substance that can be damaged by sodium bicarbonate. Thus, sodium bicarbonate help damaging bacterial cells walls as a result, bacterial colonies perish.
Briefly saying, baking soda acts in two ways first, the exfoliation of dead skin cells and second, the neutralization of acidic environment that is favorable for bacterial growth.
Is it safe to use?
It depends on its proper use. Baking soda is safe unless until it is used in a specific amount. However, if you are allergic or bad history of any health related issue, do not use it unless until you consult with your doctor or health care professional.
