Facts About Head Lice, You Must Know This

It is easy to get lost in the myths surrounding head lice; and many people do not take the time to become informed about head lice until they have a head lice infestation in their home. Suddenly, head lice facts become an urgent need of a parent trying to rid their home of an irritating problem.

They are quite a few misconceptions about head lice, from their behavior and appearance to effective treatments. It’s time to forget the myths and to start reading some head lice facts.

Head lice are small parasites that feed only from human blood. They feed by breaking the skin tissue surrounding the scalp, and lay their eggs onto strands of hair; cementing them into place with a substance called chitin. They have a lifespan of around 30 days, providing they successfully stay on a host. If they lose their host, their lifespan is dramatically reduced to just 24 hours.

One of the biggest myths surrounding head lice is their ability to transmit between hosts. You may have believed in the past that head lice could jump or fly from host to host; but this simply isn’t the case. Head lice lack the physical capability to do either activity. Instead, they move from hosts via direct or indirect contact.

The color of head lice, as well as their size, is what makes them so difficult to spot. In fact, your first clue about your head lice infestation was probably that your child was scratching their head more often; as opposed to actually seeing a parasite living in their hair. Head lice are approximately the size of a sesame seed, although they will appear much darker in color. The bigger they are, the easier they are to spot. Nits, the eggs that the lice lay, will be very small. These will be found close to the scalp.
